In 2019, “Joker” shook up the codes. Moving away from classic superhero films, director Todd Phillips took the risk of plunging us into a dark, brutal, but above all very human universe. With Joaquin Phoenix in the role of Arthur Fleck, the film becomes less a villain story than a character study, where we follow the descent into hell of a broken man. It’s a film which, to everyone’s surprise, won the Golden Lion at Venice, a first for a feature film adapted from comics.

For “Joker: Folie à Deux?” », in addition to the arrival of Harley Quinn, iconic character from the Batman universe, played by Lady Gaga, the real challenge of this film is its musical side. One might wonder how an atmosphere as dark and oppressive as that of the first film can coexist with sung numbers.

If this second opus, which also caused a sensation at the Venice Film Festival, is as daring as its predecessor, it is not unanimously unanimous among critics. If they praise the acting of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, they regret that the story itself is a little thin compared to the first film. Concerning the musical side, some see it as an original experience that shakes up the conventions of superhero films, while otherslike IndieWire, detect a slow pace and a sometimes disjointed narration.
