Medical students categorically refused the proposals of the Minister of Higher Education, Abdellatif Miraoui, while calling for a national demonstration in Rabat on Saturday, October 5.
This escalation in protests was decided during general student assemblies held in the various medical faculties, relays Al Ahdath Al Maghribia this Thursday, September 3.
The strikers consider these proposals as a simple maneuver, the objective of which is to hinder the rapprochement initiative undertaken by the Kingdom’s mediator.
According to the striking students, “the measures announced by the supervisory ministry are not aimed at resolving the crisis, especially since their main demand concerning the reduction of training years from 7 to 6 years remains unresolved. Especially since this point was not mentioned clearly in the ministry’s press release, which simply expressed its availability to explain the content of the new educational reform».
The national commission for students in medicine, dentistry and pharmacy indicated, in a press release, that the new scheduling of exams announced by the ministry was taken unilaterally.
The striking students believe that “replacing the note [éliminatoire de] zero by the results obtained during the exceptional sessions for the students who will participate will not dissuade them from clinging to their main demand, in this case their categorical refusal of the reduction in the duration of training from 7 to 6 years».
They therefore decided to boycott the October session, knowing that 99% of students at the medical faculty of Rabat expressed their total rejection of the proposals of the Minister of Higher Education, relays Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
In response to this crisis, the Moroccan Youth Civil Alliance Network called on the government to assume its responsibilities in the face of the medical students’ strike, by finding efficient solutions even “to restore trust» and avoid a “stagnation» of this movement.
