Long nicknamed the “all-in-one internet suite”, SeaMonkey offers a web browser, an email and newsgroups client, an RSS feed reader, an HTML editor, an IRC client and various web development tools.
LThis project, supported by the community and the SeaMonkey Association (SeaMonkey eV), is based on numerous components from Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, while retaining the “communicate, browser, editor” spirit dear to the Netscape Communicator era. .
What is SeaMonkey?
SeaMonkey is presented as an integrated suite aimed at advanced users and developers. At the heart of the application, the browser uses the same rendering engine as Mozilla Firefox, offering popular features like tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, smart address bar and instant search within the page (find as you type). The mail and newsgroups client, derived from Thunderbird, also includes adaptive spam filtering tools, RSS feed reading and support for multiple accounts. Added to this is a HTML editor simplified, the IRC client ChatZilla and a range of development tools (DOM inspector, etc.). This suite is therefore intended to be a direct legacy of Netscape Communicator, adapted to modern needs, and extensible via numerous additional modules.
What is SeaMonkey in 2025?
In December 2024, the team revealed the version 2.53.20 Beta 1available for Windows, macOS (x64) and Linux (23 languages supported). This new version brings fixes and improvements both in terms of the interface and the underlying engine, still based on common code with Firefox. However, the system requirements have evolved: under Linux, you now need at least glibc 2.28, gtk+2 2.24, gtk3 3.22.30 and pixman 0.36.
The project faces the challenge of compatibility with an increasingly demanding web (sites only working with the latest versions of Chrome or Firefox), but SeaMonkey is working to update its rendering engine in a parallel development branch . Furthermore, the team warned users of macOS 15.1.x, specifying that an update to 15.2 is recommended to avoid bugs when launching via the Finder or the Dock.

Since its beginnings, SeaMonkey has been developed in a way community et open source. The code, available under the MPL license (Mozilla Public License), benefits from contributions from volunteers and developers motivated by the idea of perpetuating the tradition of suites Internet.
