DIY sale of CPUs and CMs: an end of 2024 to forget at Intel?

The last “full” week of 2024 has now passed as it ended yesterday, Sunday December 29. The opportunity to make a final update on the sales of the main online reseller of German computer equipment, one of the few which makes its sales figures public: MindFactory. Our choice fell on the motherboard and processor sector, since there have been significant upheavals in the second half of 2024. The arrival of Ryzen 9000 then even a little later Ryzen 7 9800X3D chez AMDassociated with the refreshing of high-end motherboards with chipsets X870(E). Chez Intelthe launch of the platform LGA1851 with processors Core Ultra 200S and chipset motherboards Z890. How did sales go at MindFactory for week number 52 of 2024? Well it’s a tidal wave on the DIY market, a plebiscite in favor of AMD in Germany it seems!

Motherboards
(week 52)
Units sold Market shares
(units)
Average prices Turnovers Market shares
(CA)
AMD 2335 90,2 % 189 € 441 332 € 90,5 %
Intel 255 9,8 % 182 € 46 375 € 9,5 %

More than 90% of motherboards sold by MindFactory in week 52 of 2024 were AMD motherboards. We also see that the average selling price of AMD motherboards is not even lower than that of Intel cards, so in terms of turnover we are ultimately at approximately the same balance of power. What’s interesting now is to look at the sales for each socket to see, for example, if the new LGA1851 manages to find a place as some hope.

Motherboards
(week 52)
Socket Units sold Market shares
(units)
AMD AM5 1675 64,7 %
AM4 660 23,4 %
Intel LGA1851 50 1,9 %
LGA1700 195 7,5 %
LGA1200 10 0,4 %

Things are not ideal, shall we say, for Intel’s LGA1851, which will obviously have to wait until early 2025 and the launch of the rest of its range of “non-K” processors and less expensive motherboards based on B860 and H810 chipsets for try to convince more consumers. It’s time to move on to processor sales, which are even more one-sided even though we didn’t necessarily think it was possible after these first two tables.

Processors
(week 52)
Units sold Market shares
(units)
Average prices Turnovers Market shares
(CA)
AMD 4260 93,0 % 360 € 1 533 115 € 94,3 %
Intel 320 7,0 % 291 € 93 087 € 5,7 %

93% of sales can be attributed to AMD processors, whose average price of units sold is also significantly higher than that of sold Intel models (hello Ryzen 7 9800X3D). A quick look now at socket sales, even if we suspect a little (a lot) of what we are going to discover:

Processors
(week 52)
Socket Units sold Market shares
(units)
AMD AM5 3220 70,3 %
AM4 1040 22,7 %
Intel LGA1851 30 0,7 %
LGA1700 260 5,7 %
LGA1200 30 0,7 %

Intel must not have a happy holiday season, at least if they have the bad idea to look at how the German DIY market is doing with the new LGA1851 platform.

We end with MindFactory’s sales scores for last week’s top 10 processors. We will obviously not find an Arrow Lake-S there since 20 copies of the Core Ultra 7 265KF and 10 copies of the Core Ultra 9 285K were sold during this time. We will not find the slightest reference from the blues, none having sold more than 20 copies during week 52 of 2024…

Week 52 Processor Units sold
1er AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D 1620
2e AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D 470
3e AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 230
4e AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D 220
5e AMD Ryzen 5 5600 160
6e AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 140
7e AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D (Tray) 130
8e AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 130
9e AMD Ryzen 5 7500F (Tray) 110
10th AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 110

In recent comments, Intel has indicated that it has no intention of jumping into the trend followed by AMD to offer processors with additional cache memory to the general public. A choice that many are undoubtedly already questioning and even more so when they see how hardware enthusiasts who build their own PCs favor AMD’s “X3D” 3D V-Cache processors!

We notice that sales, or at least pre-orders as stocks are derisory, of Ryzen 7 9800 9800X3D and the price surge of the few remaining 7800X3D stocks. A situation that we unfortunately cannot experience in , the 7600X3D not being sold here.
