Apple will launch AirPods models equipped with an infrared camera in their stem in 2026, claims analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The module used would be similar to that of Face ID on the iPhone, and it would notably allow the user’s arm and hand movements to be captured. This would open the door to types of interactions similar to those supported by visionOS for the Apple Vision Pro. The AirPods in question could also assist the headset, for example to increase the volume of sounds coming from where the user is looking.

Foxconn would assemble these AirPods, with an initial production capacity of up to 10 million pairs per year. This is well below the sales level of current models: these could therefore be new models, undoubtedly very expensive, and not a future evolution of the AirPods Pro.

It was Mark Gurman who was the first to mention in February the project of integrating cameras into AirPods, code name B798, which would use artificial intelligence. “to assist people in their daily routines.” The journalist then spoke “technology studies” and not yet a possible release into production.
