France: Here’s why the iPhone is mandatory to order an Apple Vision Pro

Apple has finally decided to launch its highly anticipated mixed reality headset, the Vision Pro, in Europe.

An endless pre-order process…

Pre-ordering the Vision Pro isn’t as simple as clicking “buy.” Apple has introduced an additional step that requires the use of an iPhone or iPad equipped with Face ID. This process begins by scanning the customer’s face to take precise measurements and provide a headset that fits each individual’s body shape.

The first step in the pre-order process is to scan a QR code displayed on the Vision Pro order page with your iPhone or iPad’s Camera app. This action then opens the App Store and requests access to the camera. Once permission is granted, Apple says that the scanning process will begin to determine the ideal size for the headset’s light shield and headband, with the aim of “improving the customer experience.”

The scan itself is relatively simple but can be tiring. A small round window opens and asks you to look straight ahead, then slowly turn your head right, left, up, and down. This process must be repeated twice, which can be tiring if you’re using a heavy device like an iPad Pro.

Once the scans are complete, the app prompts you to update the Apple Store app to continue the pre-order process. Before finalizing the purchase, you will need to indicate whether you wear glasses or have had vision surgery. Only after all these steps can you finally proceed to payment.

The Vision Pro remains reserved for owners of devices with Face ID

This pre-order method restricts access to the Vision Pro to users with recent Apple devices that have Face ID technology, which has been available since the iPhone X. If you have an older device or a model without Face ID, it will not be possible to pre-order the headset online. You will have to go to a store to pre-order, which can be inconvenient for those who do not live near an Apple Store.

The need for an iPhone or iPad to scan your face before you can control the Vision Pro could frustrate many. Apple justifies this approach by the desire to provide a perfectly adjusted product, but it de facto excludes part of its potential customer base. Users of older products or those who prefer other smartphone brands are left out.

For those who meet the criteria, the buying experience is supposed to ensure optimal comfort with a well-fitting headset, which could improve the long-term user experience. However, Apple’s move to lock down access to its flagship product through its closed ecosystem raises questions about inclusivity and accessibility.

The arrival of the Vision Pro in France is exciting news for mixed reality enthusiasts and Apple fans alike. However, the pre-order process requiring a device with Face ID could limit the product’s accessibility. While this approach ensures a personalized and comfortable fit for the headset, it automatically excludes those who don’t own a recent iPhone or iPad, imposing an additional constraint on customers.

If you’re already equipped with the latest Apple products, the pre-order process shouldn’t pose a major problem. On the other hand, if you have older devices or prefer other brands, you will have to consider a visit to the store to be able to acquire the Vision Pro.

Pre-orders begin this Friday June 28 at 2 p.m. in France. The official availability of the product is set for July 12, but before you can even place an order, Apple imposes this rather unique but restrictive purchasing process…
