Expected for September 2024, the four iPhone 16 will change inside, but also outside. Here are the changes expected according to the many rumors.

New features of the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus

As the release of the iPhone 16 approaches, rumors and speculations about new features and design changes are increasingly rife.

  • The Action button for all: One of the most persistent rumors is that the Action button will be coming to all iPhone 16 models, including the non-Pro versions. The button, which is already on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, replaces the old mute switch. A long press performs a number of predefined actions, and the Shortcuts option lets you perform a myriad of complex tasks with a single tap. While improvements like the ability to assign multiple shortcuts to the Action button would be welcome (with a double or triple tap), rumors suggest that Apple may stick with the current limitation of only one shortcut per button.
  • Camera Rearrangement: The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus could also see a change in the layout of their rear cameras. Since the iPhone 13, the main and ultra-wide-angle lenses have been arranged diagonally. According to leaked renders, the iPhone 16 could return to a vertical lens layout. This change would not be just aesthetic; it would aim to improve spatial video capture, a key feature for the Apple Vision Pro headset.

New features of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max

  • A new Capture button: In addition to the Action button, Apple is said to be introducing a new Capture button on all iPhone 16 models. Located just below the power button, this button seems intended to quickly launch the Camera app and start taking photos or videos, without having to unlock the phone. Early leaks indicate that this Capture button would be a capacitive button, using haptic feedback to mimic the feeling of a physical button when pressed. This would allow, among other things, to benefit from multiple pressure levels, to activate the autofocus before taking a photo, like on a real camera.
  • Larger screens: The rumor that seems to interest most people concerns the increase in the size of the screens of the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The Pro models would go from 6.1 to 6.3 inches for the Pro and from 6.7 to 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. This increase in screen size will require a slight increase in the physical dimensions of the phones, although the thickness would remain the same. The new Pro models should be about 3 mm taller and 1 mm wider than their predecessors.
  • Thinner edges: To maximize the use of available space, Apple plans to further reduce the bezels of the Pro models’ displays. The iPhone 16 Pro models are expected to have bezels of just 1.2 mm, while the Pro Max is said to have bezels of 1.15 mm, beating the current record held by Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra. This bezel reduction is said to be made possible by a technology called “Border Reduction Structure” (BRS), which further compacts the copper wiring under the display.
