Garmin has unveiled its new high-end GPS computer, the Garmin Edge 1050. Although it benefits from a more defined screen, it nevertheless loses autonomy compared to its predecessor.

Two years after releasing its latest high-end GPS bike computer, the Garmin Edge 1040, the American firm unleashed the heavy artillery this Tuesday with the presentation of its new model, the Garmin Edge 1050.

While Coros arrived on this market just over a week ago with its Coros Dura, Garmin is not really banking on the same arguments for its Edge 1050. As for Coros, the manufacturer promises above all record autonomy , potentially infinite, thanks to a transflective MIP screen and a solar surface for recharging during use. At Garmin, no more MIP screen of previous meters, the Garmin Edge 1050 this time uses a more classic TFT LCD screen, as can be found on connected watches, televisions or certain smartphones. Here, no solar charging either, the manufacturer having not announced an Edge 1050 Solar version, as was the case with the Edge 1040 Solar.

A better defined and bright screen

Regarding the screen, Garmin announces that the display of the Garmin Edge 1050 offers a definition of 480 x 800 pixels for a diagonal of 3.5 inches. Unsurprisingly, this is much higher than the 282 x 470 pixels of the Edge 1040’s MIP panel. The screen is also touchscreen and the meter has a brightness sensor to automatically adjust its readability to the ambient brightness.

To provide precise tracking of your route, the Garmin Edge 1050 also includes dual-frequency geolocation tracking, compatible with GNSS GPS, Galileo and Glonass systems. It also benefits from different sensors to measure movements (accelerometer and gyroscope), act as a compass (magnetometer) and measure ascent (barometric altimeter).

Complete features

The computer is also compatible with Garmin Pay, so you can buy a baguette after your bike ride. It also includes a speaker – to benefit from voice guidance and act as a doorbell – and offers 64 GB internal storage to allow you to download additional maps. Finally, the meter is obviously compatible with Bluetooth and ANT+ protocols to allow you to connect it to power sensors or a heart rate belt.

Manage my choices

Concerning autonomy, if the Coros Dura benefits, in theory, from infinite autonomy, the Garin Edge 1050 is necessarily more limited. The American manufacturer announces up to 20 hours of use in intensive mode and 60 hours in energy saving mode. For comparison, the Garmin Edge 1040 could push up to 35 hours in intensive mode and 70 hours in energy saving mode.

Garmin Edge 1050 pricing and availability

The Garmin Edge 1050 is available now. It is offered in France at a price of 749.99 euros. The Garmin Edge 1040, with MIP screen and solar charging, remains in the manufacturer’s catalog, at the same price of 749.99 euros.
