Meta: More intimate live streams are coming to Instagram

Instagram continues its efforts to encourage more private connections on its platform. Meta Group’s social network on Thursday announced a new feature allowing users to broadcast live only to their list of close friends. Called “Close Friends on Live”, this new feature still allows you to invite up to three other people to join the streaming, but they must also be part of the list of close friends.

Launched in 2016, Instagram’s live streaming feature was initially designed to be public and open to all of the user’s followers. An option widely used by celebrities and influencers to connect with their fans and communities. With this latest innovation launched globally, Instagram gives users the ability to control who can see their broadcasts. This could encourage those who have never used this feature to do so, points out TechCrunch.

The social network suggested to the specialized site that this feature can be used to “share thoughts, catch up with friends, share memes, plan trips, do homework together or simply spend time together in real time” . It follows last year’s introduction of the feature called Notes. Appearing in the private messages section, these kinds of 24-hour stories can only contain text and emojis and are limited to 60 characters maximum. Allowing you to share a thought or reflection, they provide an easy and private way to start a conversation.
