Apple TV users who are accustomed to using this Apple device to watch movies and TV shows streamed on Netflix may soon have to take action to continue doing so. If their Apple TV is an older model, they will need to find an alternative. The streaming platform announced on its support page that its app “will no longer be available on 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs after July 31, 2024.” These two box models, released respectively in 2010 and 2012 and considered “obsolete” by Apple, allow you to view content in 720p (Apple TV 2nd gen.) and 1080p (Apple TV 3rd gen.) resolution. Unlike the current version of the Apple TV, these two devices did not have access to an app store. The Netflix app, which will no longer be supported in a few weeks, was directly integrated into it.

Aggrieved customers were notified by email, with Netflix apologizing and explaining that it wanted to “ensure the best possible user experience” by focusing on devices that could offer all the features and updates offered by the streaming platform.

Google’s YouTube video platform preceded Netflix in 2021, stopping support for these two old Apple TV models.
