“Everyone faces their conscience”: young activists of the radical left facing the challenge of getting along with the Macronists

Like a sign of hope, a desire to believe in it. It was on rue de Paradis, in the 10th arrondissement of Paris, that La France Insoumise set up its HQ on Sunday evening. And, as soon as the results of the legislative elections were announced, Jean-Luc Mélenchon brought down the suspense by declaring that all the left-wing candidates qualified in third position, including his own, would withdraw in the second round to get Macronist votes and prevent the election of new National Rally deputies. On the stage, the rebellious leader was surrounded by Manuel Bompard, the deputy at the helm of the party, and Rima Hassan, the controversial revelation of the European campaign, keffiyeh on her shoulders.

In this sublime art-deco building rented for the occasion, Lola, a 22-year-old literature student, also wearing a keffiyeh, judges this decision wise: “In other circumstances, I would have been against it. Emmanuel Macron has done so much harm. But given the seriousness of the situation, we must know how to take our responsibilities.” Lola could therefore vote for a candidate from the presidential camp if necessary, even if it was very reluctantly. “Everyone will come face to face with their conscience next Sunday.”
