HMD Skyline review: a repairable smartphone that opens up to new horizons

The HMD Skyline is equipped with a complete triple photo module, consisting of a 108-megapixel main sensor with wide-angle optics (f/1.7), an ultra-wide-angle of 13 Mpx (f/2.4 ) and a 50 Mpx x4 telephoto lens (f/2).

Module principal : 108 Mpx, f/1,7

If the excellent main module of the HMD Skyline displays 108 Mpx, it delivers 12 Mpx photos thanks to the pixel-binning. A process that groups several pixels into one to gain brightness and detail. And the result is there: we appreciate the fineness of the details and the good restitution of the small elements, whether they are the color chips or the characters on the tarot cards. Although the colors are quite saturated and tend towards blue, they flatter the retina. However, we regret digital smoothing which attenuates the texture effects, as on the cover of the book.

At night, it’s already more complicated. If you force too much on the edges to give the impression of sharpness, it makes the whole thing far too artificial and accentuates the noise. The colorimetry is nevertheless quite natural and the periphery of the image is not damaged. However, we notice some chromatic aberrations in the moiré effects.

Module ultra grand-angle : 13 Mpx, f/2,4

At ultra-wide angle, daytime photos suffer from blatant overexposure. The software processing once again inflicts excessive smoothing and the colors appear very saturated. However, the shots remain readable and do not suffer from marked distortion, even if the shots become blurry as we move away from the center of the image.

In the dark, the whole thing clearly deteriorates and takes on an unnatural orange tint. Software smoothing fails to remove digital noise or make the shots usable outside of use on social media.

Telephoto module: 50 Mpx, f/2

The observation is identical to the telephoto lens with convincing daytime shots, although we notice a few artifacts here and there, particularly at the level of the color chips, as well as far too much smoothing. When there is a lack of light, the rendering is completely messy, spoiled by shoddy software processing. The colorimetry remains rather faithful.

Front module, portrait mode, video

HMD aims to please selfie enthusiasts with a 50MP (f/2.5) front camera housed in a central punch-hole at the top of the screen. This produces correct self-portraits and is flattering in videoconferencing. Portrait mode works well with well-managed clipping.

On the video side, the device is capable of filming up to 1080p at 60 fps at the front, in 4K 30 fps at the rear, with optical stabilization (OIS) to limit tremors as much as possible on the videos taken with the main camera.
