Oppo announces a new smartphone with a muscular technical sheet for its price

Nearly a year after its departure from in July 2023, Oppo has made a timid comeback with the Oppo Reno 12 Pro. The Chinese brand continues to redeploy its pawns with two new entry-level smartphones this time, accompanied by the Oppo Watch X, a high-end watch under Wear OS.

Oppo Reno 12 FS 5G and 12 F 4G

So, hold on tight, because the names are a bit rock’n’roll. So we have two smartphones with very similar names and specifications, an Oppo Reno 12 FS 5G and an Oppo Reno 12 F 4G. We’ll first take a look at the 5G model before detailing the few differences of the 4G model.

The Oppo Reno 12 FS 5G is therefore a smartphone halfway between the entry-level and mid-range since it costs 350 euros. For this price, it displays a solid capacity, 512 GB of storage (expandable up to 2 TB with a microSD card) and 12 GB of RAM. It also integrates the same AI features as the Oppo Reno 12, which was sold for 550 euros when it was released.

On the back, the round photo block is surrounded by a circle of colored LEDs. These can react to the music you’re listening to, indicate the charge level or a call, but also display personalized colors based on the notifications received. Perfect for those who like silent mode, but who like to be notified when an important Slack message needs to be read.

This photo block houses three modules, a wide angle with 50 Mpx sensor, an ultra wide angle with 8 Mpx sensor and a macro with 2 Mpx sensor. A configuration that is all in all quite classic for this price range completed by a selfie module with 32 Mpx sensor.

The Oppo Reno 12 FS 5G therefore offers generative AI, for the most part in partnership with Google. We find the classics of the genre like the magic eraser, or the possibility of transforming the subject of a photo into a sticker. There are also the now classic productivity features like the article summary, the audio clip summary, voice synthesis or even writing assistance. French will be integrated at the end of the year.

The only little touch of originality is called Beacon Link, a feature that uses another Oppo smartphone to make a call, supposedly useful in case of high traffic on the network.

The Oppo Reno 12 FS 5G makes most of its savings on its chip, a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 engraved in 6 nm. The screen for its part is an adaptive 120 Hz Oled panel, meaning that it varies from 60 to 120 Hz.

In terms of autonomy, the smartphone offers a 5,000 mAh battery. This can be charged in 45 W with Oppo’s proprietary SuperVooc charge, but also with PPS according to the brand. PD 3.0 is also part of it. This will be all the more useful since the charger is not provided in the box.

To finish the tour of the owner, let’s add that the smartphone is IP 64 certified, so it is resistant to dust and water. Enough to take advantage of the Aqua Touch, a feature that allows you to use it almost normally, even covered in water. Software monitoring is the bare minimum: two years of major updates and three years of security patches.

Let’s move on to the 4G model and its main differences:

  • It therefore loses 5G (it’s in the name), by switching to a Snapdragon 685 chip;
  • 256GB storage and 8GB RAM;
  • The AI productivity features aren’t there.

All this helps to reduce the cost of the smartphone to 249 euros.
