AI – Scientists identify eight species of whales based on the sounds they make

An artificial intelligence model applied to whale songs would allow us to identify eight distinct species. If you capture the sound of one of these marine mammals, this software is therefore able to tell you which species it is. A sort of “Shazam for whales”, explains New Scientist in an article relayed by Korii.

A noise captured in 2014 identified years later

The device helped researchers identify a sound that was just three seconds long and was captured in 2014 over the Mariana Trench, the deepest trench on Earth in the Pacific Ocean. It was a moan followed by metallic clanks. “The average person wouldn’t think it was an animal, but rather a U.S. Navy ship,” said Ann Allen of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

But years later, thanks to a sound collection in the nearby Mariana Islands, researchers were able to identify that the recording taken ten years ago was that of a Bryde’s whale. The researchers were also able to track these migrating animals by analyzing more than 180,000 hours of underwater recordings.
