Soccer. Freddy Zix, former director of the Racing training center, has died

More than as a notable Racing player whose jersey he only wore – as an amateur – for a single season, in 1955-1956, Freddy Zix will remain in the more than century-old history of the club as one of its great trainers.

The man who for a long time directed the training center of an RCS not yet renamed RCSA, first in 1984-1985, then from 1987 to 2005, died on Sunday at the age of 89, two days shy of his 90e birthday.

This professional central defender played his first – and last – first division match in the blue tunic on September 11, 1955 against Racing (1-4). He was then 20 years old.

But it is in the amateur world that he has built a solid reputation by participating in the adventures of Pierrots Vauban and AS Mutzig. He was even the captain of the French quarter-finalist team at the Mexico Games in 1968, at a time when the pros were not yet allowed to take part in the Olympic tournament.

As director of what would later become the academy, this pure Strasbourg resident, who was also assistant coach of the pros from 1985 to 1987, supported the emergence of many nuggets, such as future internationals Olivier Dacourt and Martin Djetou, but also Valérien Ismaël, to name but a few. Replaced by Nasser Larguet in 2005, he then took care of football Wednesdays organized jointly by the club and the Bas-Rhin General Council for several years.

His funeral will be held this Friday, January 10 at 2:30 p.m. at the Saint-Ignace church in Strasbourg.

To his family and loved ones, our editorial staff extends its sincere condolences.
