Unveiled to the public during the last Eurobike but not yet available, the Ampflow e-MTBs equipped with the DJI Avinox engine are arriving on the market today. The opportunity to take a closer look at these machines which claim to revolutionize the world of e-bikes:
A well-known brand among image enthusiasts (on-board cameras, camera stabilizers, etc.) and specialist in drones, DJI surprised many people at the last Eurobike show, in July 2024 in Frankfurt, with a double launch: electric assistance DJI Avinox and the Amflow PL ebike.
We often hear that the e-bike market represents the future, particularly for its potential in the mobility and travel segment, but despite this, new players were not legion until the famous Eurobike 2024 ( read Eurobike 2024 | New features and curiosities: our selection). The approach of DJI, a heavyweight from another industry which arrives from the “leisure” and “high-end” side, is therefore intriguing.
With the couple Amflow PL (Amflow is a DJI brand created in 2023 for this project) and DJI Avinox, the group claims nothing less than revolutionizing the market. It must be said that on paper, the offer is attractive.
On the frame side, the Amflow PL (for Powerful Lightness) is a versatile platform with 150 mm of travel at the rear and 160 mm at the front, which can be equipped with 29″ or mule size wheels (29″ at the front and 27.5″ at the rear) by changing the position of reversible parts on the suspension joints. If the frame does not have a glove box in the downtube, due to the battery, a frame bag has been developed to fit perfectly in the front triangle, in front of the shock absorber.
The geometry features a head angle of 64.5°, a seat tube angle of 77°, a reach of 452 mm in size M, a bottom bracket 29 mm below the wheel axle and chainstays of 445 mm in all sizes. In other words, modern dimensions which fit perfectly into current trends for this type of bike.
On the assistance side, the values communicated are enough to raise eyebrows, as Adrien explained in his article on the subject: the Avinox develops up to 105 N m and 850 W in standard use, for a weight of approximately 2.52 kg. However, it can reach 120 N m and 1000 W with the function Boostwhich provides extra power for up to 30 seconds. In the photos, we also notice a speed sensor which seems much more precise than those of competitors (the disc in front of the brake on the rear wheel).
The batteries are not left out: 600 Wh for 2.87 kg or 800 Wh for 3.74 kg, your choice. Likewise, the functionalities are at the forefront of the market: three manual operating modes (Eco, Trail et Turbo) supplemented by an automatic mode (Auto) and the famous function Boost, an application that allows you to modify them, record your outings and activate anti-theft or even hill start assistance as well as anti-reverse.
The screen is flattering: touchscreen, it uses a 2″ Oled panel which integrates a GPS chip compatible with most satellite networks (GPS, Galileo, Beidou, Glonass and QZSS), a barometer, a compass, a temperature sensor. brightness and even an LTE (4G) chip. Finally, the handlebar control is divided in two to offer all the functionalities at your fingertips without an overloaded interface: on the left, we control the assistance (mode change), on the right is the screen (data displayed) as well than a programmable button. It also stands out from the competition by its wireless connection: it is connected to the brain of the system by Bluetooth.
All for a contained weight: Amflow announces 19.2 kg for the PL in the high-end version with a 600 Wh battery. However, this will not be available in France since the brand has decided, initially, to only offer its bikes in the 800 Wh version on our market. Still, on paper, this all seems almost too good to be true and this technical sheet raises a lot of questions.
This is good since the bikes are now available, and a model is already on its way to our editorial office. If you want to form your own opinion, it will cost you €6499 for the PL Carbon (Fox 36 Performance & Float Performance, Magura MT5, Sram GX Eagle) or €8999 for the PL Carbon Pro (Fox 36 Factory & Float X Factory , Magura MT7, Sram X0 Eagle). As for us, see you in a few weeks to find out our verdict!
