The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the decision had not yet been announced. This same person said that Shesterkin has an upper body injury.

Shesterkin’s absence would come as the Rangers have lost their last four games. They have lost in seven of their last eight games and in 15 of their last 19 games.

In doing so, they slipped from a comfortable position for playoff qualification to last place in the Metropolitan Division, and just ahead of the Buffalo Sabers in the bottom of the Association standings. East.

The 29-year-old Shesterkin, who recently signed a US$92 million contract extension through the end of the 2032-33 season, is 11-15-1 with a goals-against average of 3 .10 and a .906 save percentage after 27 games.

Winner of the Vezina Trophy as the best goaltender in the NHL in 2022, Shesterkin recorded a 2.58 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage last season.

His performances helped the Rangers get their hands on the Presidents’ Trophy, awarded to the team with the best regular season record.

Shesterkin also helped lead the Rangers to the Eastern Conference Final, which they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup-winning Florida Panthers.

Shesterkin’s absence would also come on the heels of recent transactions with the Rangers.

General manager Chris Drury traded defenseman Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks and forward Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken in trades aimed at turning the tide for the Rangers.
