Reigning Olympic 800m champion Athing Mu fell in the final of the American trials on Monday in Eugene. She will therefore miss the Paris Games this summer.

Mu (22 years old) fell after 200 m in the middle of the peloton. She was never able to get back on her competitors, crossing the line in tears. The ruthless “Trials” send the top three in each event to the Olympics, without taking into account the prize list or the rest of the season’s results.

Athing Mu, who also became world champion in the 800m in 2022 in the same stadium at Hayward Field in Eugene and trains in Los Angeles with historic coach Bob Kersee, had not run all season before these selections . She suffered a hamstring injury which delayed her preparation.

Nia Akins won the double lap in 1’57”36 and will be accompanied in Paris by Allie Wilson and Juliette Whittaker. Another surprise in the discus: reigning world champion Laulauga Tausaga (26) did not make a single valid throw during qualifying, thus missing the final and the Olympics.

The phenomenon Quincy Wilson 6th in the 400m

Quincy Hall triumphed over 400m in 44”17, his record, ahead of Michael Norman (44”41) and Chris Bailey (44”42). The phenomenon Quincy Wilson (16 years old) took 6th place in 44”94. If he is selected for the relay, he will become the youngest American male athlete to earn a ticket to the Olympic Games.

Hurdler Grant Holloway, three-time world champion in the 110m hurdles, took off in the heats with a time of 12”92, the best world performance of the year.
