An app called BananaBin adds an animation to your Mac’s trash. If it gets too full, flies will appear around it to remind you to empty it.

We are more or less lax with the trash on our Mac. Sometimes, we just fill it up and forget to empty it completely. However, it is an easy gesture: a right click is enough to get rid of this “digital trash” that takes up space. But maybe you need a reminder. There is now one: BananaBin, a temporarily free application, to be downloaded at this address.

BananaBin, which Numerama was able to test, adds flies that fly around your trash, as would be the case in real life if you left a full trash bag lying around a little too long in your kitchen. This “parasitic” animation, which could disgust more than one person, is supposed to attract your attention to the basket, in order to encourage you to do what is necessary to no longer see the flies (the number of which increases over the hours ). Fortunately the creators did not think to integrate the “bzzz bzzz” which can hit the system.

Do you want flies on your Mac desktop?

The little extra something

Note that flies will speed up the movement to escape if you hover the mouse cursor over the trash can. They will be as if frightened.

For now, the BananaBin app is offered as a free beta. But it will eventually become a paid app, Leon Schrijvers, one of the developers, told The Verge on June 30. To get BananaBin, you have to “place an order” by simply entering your email address. The amount will then be €0, but the interface is already designed to make the app paid (the price should not be high).

Once the order is placed, you will receive an email in which you can download BananaBIin (click on “View Order” to access the installation file). Once you have added it to your applications and after following the instructions, the app will be visible with a banana icon, in the bar displayed at the top of the screen.

BananaBin currently only works under the Sonoma version of macOS (the current operating system) — but compatibility with Ventura is expected later. To work, you must give two authorizations: BananaBin must be able to locate your trash on the screen and be able to calculate the size of the trashed files that are inside. To avoid being invaded by the slightest content placed in the trash, you can set the level at which the flies will appear: 10 MB (Janitor Mode), 1 GB (The Recycler) and 10 GB (Garbage Hoarder). There is also an option to automatically launch BananaBin when the Mac is turned on.

« No personal data is collected or stored », Promise the creators. Please note that BananaBin only works for the Mac’s local storage trash. iCloud and external storage may arrive later.
