Senegalese international midfielder Pape Matar Sarr admitted that his illustrious elder Sadio Mané weighed in his choice at the start of his career.
Trained at Génération Foot, a laboratory for several Senegalese crack players, Pape Matar Sarr joined FC Metz in the summer of 2020 before leaving for Tottenham two seasons later (he was bought and then loaned to Messins in 2021). Became an executive of Spurs and the team Senegal since then (24 caps, 1 goal), the 22-year-old midfielder has admitted to having been inspired by the legend Sadio Mané, who also moved from GF to the Moselle club in 2011.
“Mané is a reference for us”
“Obviously, if you hear Sadio Mané (…), if you are a Senegalese in any case because it is a reference for ushe said in an interview for Canal+ Sport Africa. He (Mané) went through FC Metz too, I said to myself why not follow in the footsteps of Sadio Mané. He went from Génération Foot to Metz. After Metz, it exploded. »
And Al-Nassr striker constitutes the model for the younger generations, it is also because he is cited as an example by the supervisors of the GF academy. “That’s what helped us too. Because when you’re at GF, we often talk to you about his time”testified Matar Sarr. “Ismaïla Sarr also did the same thing as him. (…) So that motivates you more to imitate him. Metz, it was a good time for me”he concluded.
