The announcement was made this Tuesday, October 29, in a press release distributed by Thales Alenia Space. This joint venture between the groups Thales (67%) et Leonardo (33%) signed a memorandum of understanding with the Moroccan company Panafsat.

This agreement, according to the same source, revolves around the construction of a Moroccan satellite communications system which aims to provide very high-speed connectivity to 26 African countriesincluding 23 French speakers, serving a population of more than 550 million inhabitants spread over an area of ​​12 million km².

This memorandum of understanding was signed on the sidelines of President Macron’s state visit to Morocco, in the presence of Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance, and her French counterpart. Antoine Armand.

“Thales Alenia Space will be responsible for building a flexible, very high performance satellite. Once deployed, this satellite will provide high-speed internet connectivity to accelerate the transformation of the digital landscape of the African continent by providing essential connectivity for development of high value-added services intended for governments, businesses, and citizens, while focusing on bridging the digital divide in rural and isolated areas,” reads the Thales Alenia Space press release.

“This project constitutes the next key step in the digital transformation process and the development of a digital economy in Morocco and Africa. It will change the lives of millions of Africans wishing to access the internet and the essential services they need We are delighted to be able to count on the expertise and capabilities of a partner like Thales Alenia Space, and we look forward to working with this company on a project that will greatly benefit Africa. According to Thales Alenia Space,and agreement is part of the roadmap of the two States concerning digitalization initiatives in the Pan-African region such as “Digital Economy for Africa (DE4A)” et “Digital Morocco 2030″ or even as part of the organization of the 2030 World Cup in Morocco.

Panafsat SA is a Moroccan company under private law with the status Casablanca Finance City. It was created by Ahmed Toumi, former elected member of the Radiocommunication Regulatory Council (Radio Regulation Board) of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Panafsat’s mission is to develop Morocco’s first geostationary satellite to provide connectivity to 26 African countries, a project that will contribute to the digital transformation of Africa according to global and regional goals.
