Euro 2024: the day after England’s victory, the press only talks about one player

Obviously, the English press only had eyes for his nugget after this meeting at the end of which he received the title of man of the match. Of “English hero” for the BBC at “the Bellingham masterclass” for the Sun, via “the English talisman” for the Times or “Hey Jude” for the Telegraph.

But if Bellingham was the big player in this first meeting on the English side, the Three Lions have not yet completely reassured the press across the Channel. “It was far from a five-star performance from the English but they got the job done”thus points out the Daily Star while the Times speaks of a “nervous first victory”.

“England must have suffered some damage and were pushed to their limits after half-time as Serbia pushed for an equalizer”wrote the Sun for its part, while the Mirror mentioned “an unconvincing England”especially in the 2nd period.

But the Three Lions finally started their Euro with a victory and the BBC summed up the English evening best: “For today (Sunday, Editor’s note), the victory will satisfy Southgate, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

The international press hails Bellingham’s performance

For its part, La Gazzetta dello Sport highlights more “solidity” of the English team despite a “significant drop in level” in the second half, even if the English did not concede a lot of chances. “England, on the other hand, fails to build the game, stringing together long balls for Kane who fails to get the team back up the field”further analyzed the Italian newspaper.

“The English selection imposed itself without convincing”wrote the daily L’Équipe, still pointing out the enormous meeting of its star: “And Bellingham delivered. Against Serbia, he transposed this new status of international star with his selection. For his 30th cap, Bellingham was everywhere: pressing, passing and… finishing.”

New star of Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham was obviously making the headlines in the Spanish press this Monday morning. “Bellingham rings the alarm clock”, thus writes Marca as the Englishman materialized the first opportunity of the meeting.

For its part, AS further analyzes the work of the 20-year-old player: “Jude Bellingham carries and moves like a ’10’, scores goals like a ‘9’, works like a ‘4’ and, courtesy of Harry Kane, is the armbandless leader of the England national team.”
