25,000 kilometers from Biarritz, Tyler Larronde lives in the Hawaiian archipelago. A surfer’s paradise, with the legendary Jaws wave. Maui, 1900 km² of surface area. It is the second island of the archipelago with 240 kilometers of coastline where surfers from all over the world dream of catching the wave.

Tyler, the Basque with a Hawaiian accent

Arnaud Lauqué spent a few days with Tyler, the most Basque of the Hawaiians. His father Michel is a surfing legend in the Basque Country. He moved to Hawaii in the 90s. It’s often said that damn can’t lie. And we’ll see if it’s true…

At 27, Tyler leads a natural life. He frequently stays with his family in Biarritz. In Maui, it is between the sea and the mountains that he has his refuge.

On the north shore of the island, Jaws is a jaw that can reach 18 meters high: a 6-story building falls on you! The currents are extremely violent and nearby, the reef is razor sharp. This hellish jaw that can swallow you whole was first surfed in the 70s by a few crazy people. And big names in surfing like Laird Hamilton have built the reputation of the spot. Following in the footsteps of Laird Hamilton or Kay Lenny, people come from all over the world to rub their teeth with this hellish jaw.

In Maui, we live by and for surfing. Between the sea and the sugar cane fields, Paia is a cool and charming village. It is in its small streets with colorful houses that Michel Larronde, Tyler’s father and his mother, met.

Maui is a volcanic island that is not only known for its surf spots. When you reach the age where it is better to put the board away, you can also sit down to contemplate the horizon. Another spectacle then surprises you: that of the whales coming up from Canada to give birth to their young. More than 10,000 whales migrate each year between January and April.
