President Lula during the presentation of the new law on fuels of the future, on October 8

On October 8, Brazilian President Lula promulgated a new law aimed at strengthening the decarbonization of transport and fighting climate change. Aiming to significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the transport sector by 2037, the text also intends to encourage the production of biomethane.

« Brazil is the country that will lead the biggest energy revolution on the planet », promised the Brazilian President during the presentation of the new legislative text. This text, called “ Future Fuels Act », provides in particular an increase in the share of biofuels. This involves promoting the use of ethanol, of plant origin, to replace part of gasoline, as well as biodiesel to reduce consumption of traditional diesel.

Particular emphasis will also be placed on the aviation sector in order to support the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel). Air operators will therefore be required to reduce their emissions with a target of 10% by 2037.

Heading towards biomethane

In addition to biofuels, the text also supports the use of biomethane instead of natural gas. The Brazilian state will thus launch a national program aimed at supporting research and production of biomethane.

From 2026, the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) will define annual objectives for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the natural gas sector through the use of biomethane. A green gas that can serve different uses, including mobility.
