Ice hockey: Roman Josi and Nino Niederreiter will go to the World Cup with Switzerland

Roman Josi and Nino Niederreiter will go to the World Cup with Switzerland

Published today at 3:55 p.m.

Patrick Fischer will unveil on Monday the selection of the Swiss team which will be included on the lists of the International Federation (IIHF) before the first match of the World Championship, which will be held from May 10 to 26 in the Czech Republic.

According to our information, the coach, who can already count on Bernese goalkeeper Akira Schmid (23 years old), Zurich defender Jonas Siegenthaler (26 years old), Valais center Nico Hischier (25 years old, all from New Jersey) and striker versatile Bernese from Chicago Philipp Kurashev (24 years old), will add two NHL stars to his squad: Roman Josi (33 years old) and Nino Niederreiter (31 years old).

A first since 2019 for Josi

The Bernese defender from Nashville, who is among the three finalists for the Norris Trophy awarded to the best fullback in the North American professional league, will wear the knit with the Swiss coat of arms for the first time since 2019. In the NHL, his team did not make it past the first round of the playoffs (4-2 defeat against Vancouver).

The Grisons winger from Winnipeg is a faithful among the faithful. After the Jets missed the play-offs (elimination in six matches against the Colorado Avalanche), he will line up for a seventh time at the World Cup.

Fiala, Meier and Moser will be absent

The Helvetians will not, however, be able to count on the contribution of Saint-Welsh winger from Los Angeles Kevin Fiala (27 years old). His wife is waiting for a happy event.

For the record, two NHL skaters have already had to decline their invitation for very understandable reasons. The Appenzell striker from New Jersey Timo Meier (27) has to undergo surgery (shoulder) while Bernese defender from Arizona (Salt Lake City from next season) Janis Moser (23 years old) became a restricted free agent. His contract has expired and his agent must negotiate a new one with the management of the franchise now based in Utah.

The stakes run into millions of US dollars and Moser cannot run the risk of getting injured at the World Cup in Prague where, in the first phase of the tournament, Switzerland will face Norway (May 10), Austria ( May 12), Czechia (May 13), Great Britain (May 15), Denmark (May 18), Canada (May 19) and Finland (May 21).
