Xavi’s first (slightly bitter) words after announcing his departure from Barça

After yet another turnaround, Xavi will no longer be the coach of FC Barcelona next season. This Saturday, the Spanish technician was at a press conference and reacted to this management decision.

Will leave, will not leave? This question has now been resolved on the Catalan side. This Friday, the management of FC Barcelona formalized the departure of Xavi who had nevertheless reversed his decision to leave the club at the end of this very mixed season. Under contract until June 2025, the adventure therefore ends earlier than expected for the Catalan coach.

“Laporta explained to me why he thought the club needed a change of direction. I accept it, he is the one who decides. I have no choice. I am a man of the club. I wish good luck and I will be just one supporter among others,” said Xavi at a press conference this Saturday before his last match as FC Barcelona coach against Sevilla FC this Sunday (9 p.m.).

“I have nothing against Laporta”

Even if Xavi admits that his departure was precipitated by the choice of management, he does not blame his future ex-president Joan Laporta. “Why this turnaround? They decided to change for the good of the club. I can only respect that. I was always motivated and enthusiastic. I believed in the team and I thought we could do interesting things, but that was not the case (…) But I have nothing against Laporta. These are decisions taken in the name of the club.

During a very sluggish season with a second place in La Liga and an elimination in the quarter-finals of the Champions League against PSG, Xavi announced his departure at the end of January before reversing his decision at the end of April . “In the coming days, FC Barcelona will announce the new structure of the first team”, we could read in the FC Barcelona press release this Friday while Hansi Flick should be his successor according to the Catalan press.

However, Xavi has not yet completely ruled out the idea of one day returning to his long-time team: “I think we need a break. We love this club. I hope we get the opportunity to work for the club of our lives.”
