It’s the press release everyone has been dreading. It ended up falling on Friday early in the afternoon, plunging the world of sport in general and cycling in particular into mourning. Violently injured Thursday during the junior road race at the World Championships in Zurich, which runs until Sunday, Muriel Furrer did not survive her injuries.

She was airlifted in critical condition to the University Hospital of Zurich. Friday morning, the International Cycling Union announced that the events still planned would take place as planned, in agreement with the family of the young 18-year-old rider. The exact circumstances of the accident remain unclear at this stage. It appears that the road was very wet, and it took some time for his fall to be noticed. A press conference scheduled for 5 p.m. will undoubtedly provide details as to what happened.

Muriel Furrer was a complete cyclist, who distinguished herself in mountain bike, cyclo-cross and road events. It is in this latter discipline that she won two silver medals at the Swiss Junior Championships last June.

The terrible news of his disappearance comes fifteen months after the death of another hope of Swiss cycling, Gino Mäder, on the roads of the Tour de Suisse.

Development follows.
