Former England international striker Andy Carroll, who played for Newcastle, Liverpool and West Ham and has been playing for (Ligue 2) since 2023, has signed with Bordeaux, which plays in N2 (4th division), the Girondins announced on Wednesday.

Carroll, 35, who underwent his medical on Tuesday before signing his contract, took part in his first training session at Le Haillan with his new teammates on Wednesday morning. The centre forward, known for his heading skills (1.93 m), his pivoting style and his ponytail, has been capped 9 times by the England team (2 goals). He has played 248 Premier League matches and scored 54 goals and has been playing for Amiens since last autumn, where he has scored 4 goals in 35 appearances.

Still a starter on Friday during Amiens’ trip to (0-3), Carroll was released from his contract by the Picardy club to join Bordeaux. His friendship with John Williams, the Franco-English sports director of Amiens who has ties to and who is in charge of recruiting the Girondins administratively relegated to N2 this summer, is one of the reasons for his arrival on the banks of the Garonne.

Bordeaux, placed under the protection of the commercial court at the end of July, with a risk of liquidation, was authorized on Tuesday by this body to continue its judicial recovery procedure. In N2, the Girondins occupy the 15th place of group B (out of 16 teams) with two matches in arrears and have scored only two goals, one of which was by their goalkeeper Lassana Diabaté.
