NHL: Stars sign Esa Lindell to 5 years and Thomas Harley to 2 years

The Dallas Stars have settled two deals in the space of a few hours, signing defensemen Esa Lindell and Thomas Harley to new deals.

Lindell initially agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension worth $26.25 million.

Then in the evening, Dallas announced a new two-year pact for Harley, which will earn $4 million annually.

At 30, Lindell was entering the final year of his six-year, $34.8 million contract. The new deal keeps him with the team through the 2029-30 season.

A native of Finland, Lindell was the 74th overall pick in the 2012 draft before making his debut with the Stars in 2016.

With more than 600 games in nine seasons, the Finn has scored 49 goals and 142 assists since the start of his career.

Last season, he played all of his team’s matches, maintaining an average of 24.10 minutes of play per game.

On the international stage, Lindell also has a gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championship (2014) and another gold medal at the World Championships in Germany in 2022.

The Dallas Stars signed defenseman Esa Lundell to a five-year, $26.25 million contract extension on Tuesday.

Lindell will be in the final year of his current six-year, $34.8 million deal this season and could have become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Instead, he agreed to a new deal that will pay him an average of $5.25 million per season.

“Esa is a solid presence on our blue line and has become a trusted player in all situations,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “He’s proven himself on the penalty kill and is accumulating minutes in tough defensive assignments.”

In his first full NHL campaign, Harley, 23, led his club in goals among defensemen (15) and finished second in assists (32) and points (47), all in 79 games.

“Thomas is one of the best young defensemen in the league,” Nill said. “His performance last year was a testament to his work off the ice and his desire to continually improve. We look forward to seeing him continue to grow within our team and on our blue line.”

The 6-foot-4, 206-pound guard was a first-round pick by Dallas (18th overall) in the 2019 draft.

Stars camp will begin on Thursday.
