Vincent Kompany took charge of his first Champions League match on Tuesday as Bayern Munich’s bench. The Bavarians won with a resounding 9-2 victory!

Bayern Munich’s ambitions are clear. To retake the throne in the Bundesliga and leave their mark on this first edition of the new version of the Champions League. And that’s off to a good start.

This Tuesday, Vincent Kompany managed his first Champions League match on the bench at the Allianz Arena, against Dinamo Zagreb. And for a debut, the Belgian coach could hardly have dreamed of anything better.

A meeting that will remain in the record books

At half-time, the score was already 3-0 for Bayern. Before the dark moment of the evening: after a heavy collision, Manuel Neuer was replaced by Sven Ulreich. A difficult entry into the game for the second goalkeeper, since the Croatians scored in the 48th, as well as in the 50th minute.

3-2 and the match was restarted, but not for long. Twenty minutes before the end, Harry Kane had already made it 6-2, from a penalty, after another goal from Kane (who ended up scoring four) and Michael Olise.

The 7-2 was the fourth goal of the English striker, also from the penalty spot, before the last shots of Sane and Goretzka. With this score, Bayern equaled the biggest victory in its history in the Champions League (7-0 against Shakhtar in 2015 and against Basel in 2012, both in the round of 16 second leg). It is, however, the first time in history that Bayern has scored nine goals in a C1 match.

These are nothing but three points”

“It’s unusual to score so much, but we had a lot of fun. The team showed the right mentality, the right energy. But we’ve only played one game in this competition, no more. The one and only important thing was to take the three points.”

“We scored nine goals, but we conceded two because we arrived too late. We still managed to stay calm and have a good evening,” Vincent Kompany said at a press conference after the match, according to comments collected by Reuters.
