Retired from the field in 2017, Xabi Alonso quickly decided to devote himself to his new career: that of a coach. Coach of Real Sociedad's B team between 2019 and 2022, the Spaniard saw Bayer Leverkusen place their trust in him more than two years ago. A trust that the 2010 world champion has more than repaid to his leaders since he led the club to its very first championship title last year in addition to winning the German Cup. All while remaining undefeated in the Bundesliga.
Xabi Alonso ready to stay at Leverkusen until 2026?
Obviously, such performances aroused envy and he found himself in the sights of Bayern Munich, Liverpool but also Real Madrid. Finally remaining in Leverkusen for an additional season, his future seemed to be mapped out with a departure this summer with the succession of Carlo Ancelotti in the Spanish capital in line. However, Relevo reveals that the Italian could well continue his mission beyond next summer. While he continually manages to reverse the trend, the 65-year-old coach will not be kicked out if the results follow. In other words, in the event of victory in La Liga and/or the Champions League, “Carletto” will be extended by the White House.
Designated as the Italian's successor in Madrid, Xabi Alonso is in no hurry and could therefore wait until 2026, which would involve staying an additional season at Bayer. Which wouldn't bother him at all. Quite the contrary. One thing is certain, Xabi Alonso seems to be waiting for Real Madrid and Real Madrid seems to be waiting for its former player.
