With a total of 138 cases detected since August, Reunion is on the verge of reaching the epidemic threshold in the short term according to the latest bulletin from Public Health France. Possibly as early as next week.
With 39 cases verified for the last week of the year and already ten waiting to be consolidated for the first of 2025, chikungunya continues to progress in Reunion.
Public Health France, in its epidemiological bulletin of Tuesday January 7, lists a total of 138 cases reported since the reappearance of indigenous cases in August 2024.
38% of patients recorded in week 52 were isolated cases, compared to 23% the previous week, which confirms the continued spread of arbovirus. Especially since some appear outside known centers and in municipalities hitherto spared.
“We are observing an intensification of the circulation of chikungunya in the territory, with a worrying geographical dispersion” continues the bulletin. Which makes Public Health France say that “the transition to an epidemic situation seems very likely in the short term.”
Because if the scale of the number of cases remains relatively moderate, this can be explained by the succession of public holidays during this end-of-year holiday period and raises fears of a recovery in the first weeks of 2025.
“The pre-epidemic stage has been reached”considers Public Health France, “and the territory could enter an epidemic situation as early as next week.”
The situation regarding dengue, on the other hand, remains calm.
