Since its creation in 1954, succeeding the National Junior Cup organized from 1937 to 1939, the Gambardella Cup, named after Emmanuel Gambardella in homage to the president of the French Federation from 1949 to 1953, has enabled numerous young to reveal themselves and show their potential to major professional clubs. Very often, at the end of this competition, young players immediately sign their first professional contract. Initially reserved for junior teams of professional clubs, the Gambardella Cup was open to amateur clubs from 1956. In this article, we look back at the results of this competition from 1954 to 2024.

Highlights of the competition

In the 1968 final, FC won the Cup against thanks to a lower average age. In 1973, the final was moved from to due to the presence of the two Breton clubs, and . Since 1998, the final has generally been played at the Stade de France, with the exception of the 2023-2024 edition, played at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium. In 2002, the competition was adapted to the U19 category (formerly U18) and, in 2018, it moved to the U18 category from the 2019-2020 season.
