The Canadian returned yesterday from a long trip abroad and received a visit from the Vancouver Canucks at the Bell Centre.
It was a particularly physical match as the defenders Kaiden Guhle et Jayden Struble quickly set the tone with impactful body checks.
After seeing the Canucks take the lead by a score of 3 to 1, the troop of Martin St. Louis found a way to not only get back into the game but even take a 4-3 lead thanks to three consecutive goals.
The opposing team managed to create a tie but it was ultimately CH who had the last word thanks to a goal from the captain Nick Suzuki on the power play during overtime which gave his team the victory by a score of 5 to 4.
After the match, however, Suzuki did not immediately take part in the team’s famous victory ritual in which he reunites with his teammates. Cole Caufield, Christian Dvorak, Kirby Dach et Juraj Slafkovsky to form the victorious circle and instead made them wait.
But he had a good reason to leave them behind.
Instead, he went to the other end of the rink, where the referees come out to go to their locker room, to meet the Quebec official Eric Furlatt who had just officiated his 1,500th career NHL game. In a very classy gesture, he wanted to give him as a souvenir the puck from the match that he had previously collected after his goal.
It’s with gestures like this that we understand a little better why he wears the C on his sweater, he who went to the right school with Shea Weber as a mentor during his early years in the league.
