CES 2025 – BMW unveils the cockpit of its future Neue Klasse electric cars

Present at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, BMW has just unveiled the cockpit which will equip its future Neue Klasse range. New head-up display, new operating system, steering wheel with active haptic feedback, the brand wants to make an impact to illustrate its vision of the mobility of the future.

With the Neue Klasse range, BMW intends to enter a new era. While production of the first model is due to start this year, the Munich firm says a little more about the on-board technologies. BMW took advantage of CES 2025 in Las Vegas to preview its new cockpit.

A full-width heads-up poster

Say hello to BMW Panoramic iDrive, the new system that will equip all future models in the Neue Klasse family. Among the most notable new features of this system is BMW Panoramic Vision: a head-up display technology that extends across the entire width of the windshield, between the two A-pillars.

Unlike traditional solutions, this system projects information onto a dedicated black surface, making it visible to all occupants. As the brand specifies, the driver still remains “ at the center of the experience »: essential data, such as speed or navigation, is displayed in its field of vision.

As an option, BMW offers a 3D head-up display, which adds an extra layer of information and interactivity. This device displays data related to automated driving and navigation alerts. Innovations, patented by BMW, which aim to “ minimize distractions » while « offering optimal readability ».

Natural language voice commands

The German firm also unveiled its new operating system called BMW Operating System X. This constitutes “ the backbone » of all the new technologies presented. Developed in-house, it is based on a “ modern software architecture » derived from Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

BMW specifies that it was designed to “ offer deep customization, increased compatibility with OTA updates and seamless integration of digital functions “. For example, thanks to this system, the driver can configure all of the vehicle’s screens according to his preferences or the driving mode.

The system also allows the integration of complex voice commands in natural language. Now, queries like “ find me a charging station near a supermarket ”, can be processed depending on the manufacturer. At the Las Vegas show, visitors can test a beta version of this new personal assistant.

A multi-function steering wheel with haptic feedback

The Bavarian brand also unveiled a new multi-function steering wheel. This adopts an approach called “ shy-tech ”, with backlit buttons that only appear when activated. BMW specifies that “ haptic controls provide precise feedback, preventing the driver from having to take their eyes off the road ».

The philosophy “ hands on the wheel, eyes on the road » is also reflected in the organization of functions. The driving assistance controls are on the left, while the buttons for multimedia and personalization are grouped on the right. This clear logic aims to “ reduce the learning curve for new users ».

Finally, the sound dimension of the new vehicles has not been neglected: the Neue Klasse models will introduce a new audio signature called HypersonX, developed by the BMW Group Sound Design Studio. This system offers 43 sound signals, adapted to different driving modes, “ for increased immersion ».

BMW is preparing to change eras

With the BMW Panoramic iDrive and the Operating System These innovations respond to a key challenge for the manufacturer: adapting to a world where software plays a central role in the definition of the vehicle.

There is no longer any doubt: with this new family of electric vehicles BMW wants to make a new start. The Neue Klasse platform will serve as the basis for 6 electric models, including the future iX3 and Series 3. Beyond technological innovations, the range will also benefit from advances in terms of autonomy and charging.

It remains to be seen how these promises will materialize in real use.
