More than 1.9 million Mauritanians are called to the polls, today Saturday June 29, 2024, to elect their President in the first round of the Presidential election.

Thus, some 4,728 polling stations spread across Mauritania will welcome nearly two million voters registered on the electoral lists who will choose their President from among the 7 candidates validated by the Mauritanian Constitutional Council.

Current President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani is at the top of this list, after being nominated by the Majority parties including the ruling Insaf party to run for a second term as president.

In addition to President Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, the list also includes Mohamed Lemine El Mourtaja El Wavi (independent candidate), Hamadi Sidi El Mokhtar Mohamed Abdi (president of the National Rally for Reform and Development Tawassoul), Otouma Antoine Souleimane Soumaré (independent candidate ), Mamadou Bocar Bâ (president of the Alliance for Justice and Democracy), El-Id Mohameden M’bareck (MP), Biram Dah Abeid (human rights activist).

The electoral campaign for this Presidential election which took place from June 14 to 27 was punctuated by intense activities of the candidates competing for this election who used several channels to present their electoral programs and reach the greatest number of voters .

A second round of this presidential election is planned for July 13 if no candidate succeeds in obtaining enough votes in the first round.

The last presidential election in Mauritania taking place in 2019 was won by outgoing President Ould El Ghazouani after obtaining 52% of the votes.
