It was the first time we saw the Pope at the G7… Giorgia Meloni naturally placed him to her right in the official photo of the Bari summit. A summit which not only brought together its seven Member States, but also, and at the sole initiative of Italy, the inviting power, a dozen countries from the South, America, Africa and the East.
Italy intended to show that it is capable of playing a key and even innovative role in relations between the “Global North” and the “Global South”, and even between the South and the South! Thus Brazil and Argentina which do not speak to each other, but which Ms Meloni brought together, or Algeria and Tunisia, so often separated; and then the Turkey of Mr. Erdogan, who loves to insult France, but who could not avoid Emmanuel Macron, and found himself with the Emirates, Jordan or India, friends of the French.
