In Essonne, a highway will soon allow electric vehicles to recharge while driving

An innovative project has just started in Essonne on the A10 motorway. Electric trucks will soon be able to recharge while driving thanks to an induction charging system, reports News Essonne . The work, which began on November 12, 2024, concerns a 1.5 km test section near Angervilliers.

First, the necessary electrical equipment will be installed. “Until the end of the year, the work only concerns the shoulder”explains Pierre Delaigue, director of electric mobility at Vinci Autoroutes, to our colleagues. Coils will then be placed under the roadway from January 2025.

An electromagnetic field

How does it work? The coils under the roadway will emit an electromagnetic field which will be picked up by trucks equipped with other receiving coils. It will then be transformed into electric current which will power the vehicle battery. Pierre Delaigue affirms that this new development will be “absolutely transparent for users”.

The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport, which represents 7% of national emissions, as the director of electric mobility at Vinci Autoroutes points out. This project represents an investment of 26 million euros and is subsidized by the State as part of the 2030 plan.
