WhatsApp takes over a flagship feature from Google Meet and Instagram

Video calls will soon be more lively with the arrival of augmented reality filters, a feature that we already know well elsewhere.

Video calls have been an integral part of WhatsApp for years, with Meta working to improve its app’s video conferencing features in the face of services from Google and Apple.

After introducing the possibility of conversing with up to 32 people, but also of making video calls from your PC, WhatsApp will draw inspiration from what is offered in particular at Google Meet, namely augmented reality filter options.

Add effects to your video calls

It is within the beta version of WhatsApp for Android (2.24.13.14) that the WABetaInfo site spotted a slew of new features for video calls. The service arrives a little after the battle, but will obviously implement filters of all kinds to apply to your face or to your background.

Concretely, it will be possible to change the appearance of your face in order to smooth your features for example or apply certain filters as is the case for Instagram for example. You will be able to use a real avatar which replaces the entire window, with animated interactions, we imagine.

Finally, it will be possible to change your background visual to gain a semblance of confidentiality, especially during group calls. Here we find what we know from Google Meet and Microsoft Teams, the functionality will also be ported to the desktop version of the application in the future.

WhatsApp is therefore gradually catching up on videoconferencing with this filter functionality which should arrive in the coming months for the general public.
