British singer, Ed Sheeran, has won his plagiarism case over his hit “Thinking Out Loud“.
British author, composer and singer Ed Sheeran won his plagiarism trial in a New York higher court on Friday over his 2014 song “Thinking Out Loud”, which he was accused of copying from a hit by the American Marvin Gaye.
The English pop star’s song is not an illegal copy of “Let’s Get It On”, the court ruled. The case was brought in 2018 by the company Structured Asset Sales (SAS), which owns part of the rights to Marvin Gaye’s song.
The rights previously belonged to Ed Townsend, an American musician and producer who co-wrote the track with Marvin Gaye. Released in 1973, this soul classic has remained famous for its guitar notes and the sensual vocals of the prince of soul and the Motown label. Ed Townsend’s relatives also filed an action against Ed Sheeran, but the New York federal court dismissed them in May 2023.
