Morocco is progressing to second place on the African scale in terms of innovation, according to the 2024 report of the renowned Global Innovation Index (GII) published by the World Intellectual Property Organization.

A press release from the Ministry of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation specifies that the WIPO report shows significant progress by the Kingdom, which rises to 66th place in the world among 133 economies, thus gaining 4 positions compared to the previous edition.

“The Moroccan economy demonstrates a remarkable capacity to transform investments in innovation into high-performance products and services, ranking 47th in terms of innovation results, with an increase of eight places compared to the previous edition », Explains the GII 2024 report, cited in the press release.

It also highlights that Morocco joins the group of middle-income economies in the top 70 of the ranking which have progressed the fastest in this ranking since 2013.

According to the press release, the National Plan to accelerate the transformation of the ecosystem of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation (PACTE ESRI 2030), developed following an inclusive co-construction approach, deploys actions aimed at consolidating achievements in innovation and providing innovative responses to identified challenges.

“The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation takes this opportunity to express his warmest congratulations to all operators and stakeholders in innovation, as well as to all partners, for the efforts made and remarkable achievements which resolutely position Morocco on the path to a nation of knowledge and a crucible of innovation,” we add.

Developed since 2007, the GII assesses the performance of the innovation ecosystem of more than 133 economies. It is based on 78 indicators that cover the main aspects of innovation, namely institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, business sophistication, as well as knowledge and technology products, and products of creativity. These indicators are organized into two categories: inputs (53 indicators) and outputs (25 indicators).
