Emma D’Arcy in the series “House of the Dragon”

TV SERIES – After seven seasons of Game Of Thrones, we thought we had seen it all. We were very wrong. This Monday June 17, season 2 of House of the Dragon starts on Max. And I might as well warn you, the screenwriters in charge of adapting the universe created by George RR Martin did not wait to let the intrigue settle before plunging you into the deep end of blood.

Those who love the Targaryens and their dragons, the Starks, but also the Hightower or Tully families (and no, not the Lannisters) have noted the date in their calendar for months. On Sunday, June 16, HBO aired the first episode of season 2 of the spinoff series House of the Dragon, dedicated to the rivalry between two factions within the Targaryen clan. At stake: knowing who is legitimate to succeed Viserys Targaryen, reign over the country and ascend the Iron Throne.

The end of season 1

There we find the opposing clans: that of Viserys’ daughter, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), and that of his son Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn Carney). The war that brewed in the first season is imminent. And for good reason, at the very end of season 1, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), brother of the young king, coldly killed his cousin Lucerys Velaryon, the son of Rhaenyra, with the help of his gigantic dragon. This murder shattered any hope of possible reconciliation between the two families.

This article contains spoilers for the first episode of season 2 of House of the dragon.

The shock of episode 1 of HOTD season 2

The list of episodes of Game Of Thrones which shocked viewers is long: the death of Ned Stark, The Battle of the Bastards, the marriage and death of Joffrey, the fight between the Viper and the Mountain, The Red Wedding, the rape of Sansa, etc. But this one definitely enters the list of the most abominable.

The very first episode of season 2 picks up almost immediately after this dramatic sequence. Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Rhaenyra’s husband, a master manipulator, secretly goes to King’s Landing to sponsor the murder of Aemond, thereby attempting to rebalance the balance. But, there is a but. The two men to whom he entrusts this task will take liberties. Not finding the one-eyed prince in the royal apartments, they will imagine a fallback solution allowing them to fulfill their contract and receive the sum that had been promised to them.

Having heard Daemon say ” a son for a son “, they decide to kill the heir to the throne, the young prince Jaehaerys, instead. They therefore went to the royal suite, and decapitated the little 4-year-old boy in his bed, after asking the terrified queen to point him out. You read correctly.

The scene itself is largely hidden from viewers, yet it is oppressive. The viewer hears everything on the one hand, and sees everything in the eyes of the child’s mother, Queen Helaena. She flees the room after taking her daughter in her arms, to the sound of repeated knocks in her child’s cradle…

If the rest of the season follows the same path, viewers will experience many evenings of high tension.
