New appointment on AlloCiné! Every two weeks, we recommend 5 must-see titles arriving on Netflix in the coming days.

The underside of the family (June 28)

What is this film about?

An unexpected love story leads to very funny consequences for a young woman, her mother and the famous actor who employs her… Because here they are all three struggling with romantic relationships, sex and existential questions!

Why does this hype us up?

After having set us on fire in Paperboy, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron are reunited in this film where they once again revolve around each other. Originally scheduled for 2023, A Family Affair was postponed due to the writers’ strike. This slightly trashy and offbeat romantic comedy has everything it takes to be Netflix’s summer hit…

Where We Come From (July 1)

What is this film about?

In the heart of New York, the Washington Heights neighborhood is where everything is possible. Usnavi, owner of a small café in the neighborhood, dreams of reconnecting with his origins, in the Dominican Republic. But everything becomes complicated when he meets the eyes of Vanessa, a young woman who dreams of becoming a stylist. Their meeting, against a backdrop of dance and music, will turn their lives upside down in unexpected ways.

Why does this hype us up?

Whether you are a fan of musicals or not, Where We Come From is one of those films that is accessible due to its subject (the gentrification of New York’s working-class neighborhoods) and its style of songs (rap, r’ n’b, Puerto Rican sounds…). It’s well played, the scenes directed by Jon M. Chu (Sexy Dance) are quality and his story will take you through all the emotions.

Le Flic de Beverly Hills : Axel F. (3 juillet)

What is this film about?

Detective Axel Foley is back on duty in Beverly Hills! When his daughter’s life is at stake, he teams up with her, but also with a new partner and his old friends Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, to uncover a conspiracy. The temperature is likely to rise a notch!

Why does this hype us up?

Thirty years since Eddie Murphy last played this character in the cinema. And this return would not have been possible without Netflix which managed to convince several actors – Judge Reinhold and John Ashton in the lead – to return in this sequel. The opportunity for a whole new generation to discover Axel Foley aka the king of the punchline. Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon Levitt are among the new faces of the franchise and that makes you want even more.

The Man of a Thousand Children (July 3)

What is this series about?

Families discover that the charismatic man they trusted is the father of several hundred, even several thousand, children around the world.

Why does this hype us up?

Every week, Netflix offers its subscribers a documentary series that looks at a news item or an “extra-ordinary” story. The one that interests us here is quite incredible since it tells us the journey of Jonathan Meijer, a Dutchman in his forties who took advantage of the system’s vagueness to donate his sperm to more than 500 families…

Super Mario Bros the Movie (July 5)

What is this film about?

While trying to repair an underground pipe, Mario and his brother Luigi, both plumbers, find themselves plunged into a new magical universe through a mysterious conduit. But when the two brothers are separated, Mario embarks on a thrilling adventure to find Luigi.

Why does this hype us up?

The most profitable film of 2023, with more than $1.3 billion earned in a few weeks and 7 million admissions in France, Super Mario Bros is finally arriving on Netflix. Funny, fresh, faithful to the universe and full of easter eggs, it appealed to both children and adults. A film to watch and rewatch that will surely (re)make you want to play the console this summer…
