Two boats carrying Somali migrants were found near Nosy Bé on Friday. According to the Malagasy maritime and river port agency, they were trying to reach Mayotte when they suffered an engine failure. 22 of the 70 passengers lost their lives after drifting at sea for almost three weeks.

They left Somalia on November 2 before suffering an engine failure and drifting at sea. One of the ships was found by Malagasy fishermen, the other managed to dock in the Bay of Crater port.

These migrants were trying to reach Mayotte. Of the 70 passengers, 22 did not survive the crossing. The survivors were cared for by healthcare professionals and are under surveillance. In recent years, more and more migrants from the African continent have undertaken the crossing, as figures from Ofpra show.
