Under threat of a motion of censure, Michel Barnier receives opposition to Matignon this Monday

Michel Barnier will meet several members of the opposition today in a context where his government is threatened with a motion of censure. Marine Le Pen and Mathilde Panot will be received by the Prime Minister.

A tense encounter. Michel Barnier receives Marine Le Pen today at 8:30 a.m., leader of the National Rally, who threatens to overthrow him. The Prime Minister will see representatives of the opposition parade all day in Matignon.

The government fears that the opposition will table a motion of censure against it. The latter could come from an agreement between a majority of deputies of the National Assembly from the left and the far right and would aim to obtain the resignation of Michel Barnier.

After his meeting with Marine Le Pen, the Prime Minister will meet Emmanuel Macron for their traditional weekly meeting. Then, at 5:15 p.m., Mathilde Panot, representative of the Insoumis, will be received in turn.

The latter has for the moment threatened to table a motion of censure against the government if it uses 49.3 in December to have the 2025 budget adopted without a majority.

During the day, the Prime Minister will also see Stéphane Lenormand, president of the Liot group (Libertés, independents, overseas and territories) as well as Eric Ciotti, UDR.

THE RN maintains the pressure

The idea of a motion of censure targeting the current government has been gaining ground in recent weeks. An Ipsos poll for La Tribune Dimanche last week indicated that supporters of La insoumise (88%), the Socialist Party (73%) and the National Rally (67%) wanted a motion of censure.

This Sunday, Sébastien Chenu, vice-president of the National Rally, announced that Michel Barnier's negotiations will not change anything in the current situation.

“We don't buy political opponents with junk. It is not by erasing two or three little things at the margin that Michel Barnier is going to change the logic of his budget. What we are asking for is a political break with Emmanuel Macron's line. Michel Barnier did not initiate this rupture. And it shows in his budget,” he said.
