The anthology 5 Centimeters per Second of Makoto Shinkai will be entitled to a new lease of life next year, through a live film adaptation.

Scheduled for fall 2025 in theaters across Japan, the feature film will feature Hokuto Matsumuraa member of the boy band SixTONES, for whom this will be his first leading role in a film. The production was entrusted to Yoshiyuki Okuyamaa director so far known for commercials and music videos, including those for the songs KICK BACK And Kanden of Kenshi Yonezu. At his side, Ayako Suzuki is in charge of the script. The latter is known for having worked on the live series Katakoi Gourmet Nikki and the film Ai ni Ranbo.

For the moment, only a promotional visual around the actor Hokuto Matsumura has been unveiled. We will therefore have to be patient to discover the first images of the film.

Originally released in 2007, 5cm per Second is an anthology film consisting of three medium-length films, all directed by Makoto Shinkai at CoMix Wave studio. Previously released on DVD and Blu-ray by Kazethe film returned in 2021 at All The Anime.

A manga adaptation in two volumes signed Yukiko Seike was published in 2010 in Japan. It was made available to us in 2020 by the publishers Pika. In the same year, the publisher also published the novel version of the work, written by Makoto Shinkai himself.


Synopsis – 5 Centimeter per Second:

When they start CM1, young Takaki and Akari meet. New to this school, Takaki has just moved to Tokyo. Both used to changing cities according to their parents’ professional transfers, the two children quickly become friends. But Akari’s family is transferred to the north of Japan, then Takaki’s must leave for Tanegashima, an isolated island in the South… Will they manage to maintain the bond that unites them and confess their love for each other despite the distance?
