Six years of updates
As a reminder, even if a smartphone is in perfect marketable condition, it should no longer be used when it stops receiving security updates from its manufacturer (unless you find alternative software). And unfortunately, for years, Android smartphone manufacturers have been very poor students when it comes to software update policies. Indeed, it was not uncommon for a high-end or mid-range Android device to only benefit from three years of software updates.
But in recent years, many brands, including Google and Samsung, have made efforts to extend the lifespan of their devices. Samsung, for example, has committed to providing 7 years of security updates and Android OS updates for the Galaxy S24 series smartphones. And the good news is that Samsung’s efforts aren’t limited to its premium products. Indeed, as reported by our colleagues at 01net, the manufacturer has committed to providing software support for the Galaxy A16 for a period of six years. In other words, for six years, users of this affordable smartphone will be able to receive much-needed security updates.
An affordable, yet durable smartphone
Samsung offers two versions of the Galaxy A16: a 4G model using a MediaTek G99 chip and sold for 219 euros, as well as a 5G model which uses the Exynos 1330 chip and which the manufacturer will market for 249 euros. On both devices, we have 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. This smartphone will be available in France in a few weeks, according to Journal du Geek.
It should also be noted that despite the positioning of the Galaxy A16, Samsung offers a rather acceptable technical sheet. The device has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen, with Full HD+ definition (2,340 x 1,080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. On the back, there is a 50-megapixel main sensor accompanied by a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle and a 2-megapixel macro. Otherwise, the battery has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and the Galaxy A16 can be charged at 25W.
