Flight to Chicago hits birds: Return to Kloten

Shortly after takeoff, a Swiss plane struck birds. He had to turn back and land later after burning his kerosene to be lighter.

The emergency services were on the job when the plane arrived

Swiss flight LX6 took off from Zurich on Friday morning at 10:20 a.m. bound for Chicago. But shortly after takeoff, the Airbus A330 received a message from the pilot: “we have an engine failure, pan pan pan”. The pan-pan code is an emergency message in ship and aircraft radio communications.

Contacted, the company specifies: “On the Swiss LX6 flight from Zurich to Chicago, a bird collision occurred after takeoff, following which the crew decided to return to Zurich for safety reasons. A replacement aircraft will be made available for this flight, which is scheduled to depart at 2:30 p.m.

Hassle-free return

As Swiss again indicates, the Airbus A330 had to enter what is called a holding racecourse, a very precise loop circuit in order to burn fuel and thus be able to land safely. “When the plane was light enough, the pilots returned to Zurich airport,” says Swiss. Flight LX6 finally landed safely.

Already in 2018, a Swiss plane of the same type had to do the same and “enter the racetrack” to do lengths there for five hours. This is because the Swiss Airbus A330 does not have a fuel dumping system (a system that allows the tanks to be emptied).
