The Moroccan selection of local players was placed in Group A of the African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024), alongside Kenya, Angola, DR Congo and Zambia. This draw was carried out on Wednesday January 15 in Nairobi.
Double winner of the 2018 and 2020 editions, organized in Morocco, the Atlas Lions will play in the group stage in the Kenyan capital. As for Senegal, reigning champion, it will appear in group D with Congo, Sudan and Nigeria.
Following the withdrawal of several teams during qualifying, two places remain to be filled. Additional tournaments will be held to determine the Q1 and Q2 teams that will complete the competition.
A calendar postponed to 2025
Initially scheduled from February 1 to 28, 2024, the CHAN will finally be held in August 2025, according to an announcement from the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This postponement is linked to the time needed to ensure that infrastructure in the three host countries — Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda — meets the required standards. CAF will later specify the exact date of the start of the competition.
Here is the composition of the groups:
Group A: Kenya, Morocco, Angola, DR Congo, Zambia
Group B: Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic
Group C: Uganda, Niger, Guinea, Q1, Q2
Group D: Senegal, Congo, Sudan, Nigeria
Preparations disrupted for Morocco
Due to the postponement of CHAN, the Moroccan coach, Tariq Sektioui, canceled the preparation course for players born in 2000 and after, initially scheduled for January 12 to 15, 2025 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex. This gathering, which was to bring together 30 players, was suspended pending a suitable schedule.
