Seine-Maritime, Somme, Pas-de-Calais and the Nord were placed on alert this Tuesday, January 7 by Météo-France for the day of Wednesday, due to “snowy precipitation” expected from the following day. -noon, before a mild spell on Thursday.
Storm Floriane has barely dissipated when another disturbance arises. This Tuesday, January 7, Météo-France placed four departments in the north of France on orange snow-ice alert for the day Wednesday. The reason: “An unremarkable winter episode for the regions concerned but notable enough to make traffic conditions difficult”anticipates the meteorological institute.
The departments concerned by vigilance are Seine-Maritime, Somme, Pas-de-Calais and Nord. They will go into orange vigilance on Wednesday afternoon, from 2 p.m.
“On contact with colder air to the north, precipitation becomes snowy from Upper Normandy to Hauts-de-France”according to the agency, which predicts a weakening of these precipitations “in the middle of the night from Wednesday to Thursday”.
Expected snowfall accumulations vary from 5 to 10 centimeters over the entire episode. Météo-France also calls for a “special vigilance” because the “Ice, even in small quantities, can be particularly annoying for road traffic”.
If the most intense axis of the snowy episode this Wednesday is expected from Seine-Maritime to Nord-Pas-de-Calais, “there is still a minority scenario in which the main snow axis could also extend to the departments going from the east of Calvados to the north of the Ardennes via the west of Val-d'Oise”and less concern the extreme north of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Météo-France hypothesis.
This new transition to orange vigilance comes a few days after the strong gusts of wind which accompanied the Floriane depression over France on Sunday, plunging 40,000 homes into darkness, particularly in Ile-de-France. In total, 21 departments were placed on orange vigilance overnight from Sunday to Monday, mainly in the northern half of France.
